Default The importance of controling the space.

In any tense, emergency or suspicious situation,no matter how well prepared,or numbered someone is,it is always important to control the surrounding perimeter where the issue at hand is taking place to ensure your safety as well as anyone else innocent that might be in the general vicinity. This means keeping alert and aware of anything or anyone that moves, and clearing blind corners and rooms before proceeding.

Some tend to forget this neccessary routine when conducting their daily operations.Though it is most dangerous not to 'control the space' as a law enforecment officer it can be also detrimental in several other kinds of professions and situations albeit scuba diving, hunting, flying aircraft even just walking down the street......etc.

Sadly quite a few years ago two San Jaun,Peurto Rican Police detectives making an arrest of two robbery suspects at a bakery made this mistake.

(notice as 1 officer is patting down one of the suspects that was actually caught stealing, another stands off to the left observing and acting somewhat irratic.A second officer enters the shop not aware that the second man is an accomplice.......so he assumes that he is just a customer/bystander and walks past the second man and turns his back to him......a fatal mistake.

RIP but a lesson to be learned........ALWAYS CONTROL THE SPACE.
